Nancy Pelosi and husband along with the first family are doing their best to "feel our (financial) pain" this holiday season with ~~an extravagantly flagrant~~ a hard-earned vacation in a $10,000/night suite at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka'upulehu in Kona on the island of Hawaii.

"Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, who served as Speaker of the House and is now head of the House minority, is once again spending her Christmas at the exotic Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka'upulehu in Kona on the island of Hawaii.

Pelosi reportedly plans to spend her Christmas Eve at midnight mass in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona.

The resurgence of interest in this character has me L. M. A. O.! Celebrated in European countries around Dec 5/6th, "Krampuslauf " seems to be like a Christmas Mardi Gras with devils—initially meant to be a means of keeping the kids in line the event has instead become an outlet to dress up and get loaded (much like an office Christmas party but without the horns and hooves). If I recall, in one of the many stories it is said that Krampus likes Schnapps. I'm sure he does. I'm guessing it pairs well with roasted brat.

You all don't know how bad I want to wear a shirt with his likeness to work. The creative person who came up with what has to be one of my favorite depictions (previously linked) of Krampus, has an online store with more goodies to purchase.

Next year we are definitely issuing Krampus cards smeared with coal and accompanied by tiny switches. ::chuckles to self:: I find mirth in this because we are experiencing quite the humble Christmas this year as I'm sure many are. Truly, a good friend of mine often known to declare, "it's not about the presents" couldn't be more right.

This year I can take 'em or leave 'em.

Seriously. This has nothing to do with politics (thank goodness, right? Nobody seemed to give two shits about my Herman Cain coverage anyway so why bother?)

I've decided to delve into learning HTML and CSS in order to make myself a bit more marketable (read: make more money). It staves off boredom as well.

Ever find yourself in a boring job of which you are way overqualified for? Yeah, me too. Hence the spur to add to my skill set. I figure I'm parked at a pc all day anyway so why not make the most of it?

Back when FrontPage was the big deal I played around with website building. So glad I can't find any of those site in existence anymore. Those were so bad. Total design nightmares. I'm sure those old pages are cached somewhere since "the internet is forever" but I'm not going to go digging them up.So far I'm checking into the O'Reilly series of books. I've always had luck with those back when I was learning page layout.I find myself doing a lot of surfing as well as inventing stuff for myself to do at work—stuff that doesn't seem to be fully appreciated. Rather than continue to cast pearls to swine, I take it as a sign that my talents are underutilized and that I need to find another gig.

HR is usually comprised of three extremely fat-assed cat ~~hoarders~~ owners who have nothing better to do than circulate e-mails pertaining to birthday reminders, company-sponsored office parties, who died, who had a baby, who is about to retire, and what holidays are paid.

HR: a usless bunch of clique-ish, overweight, gossipy ol' harpies who show up, type some emails, eat lunch, then circulate some company memos in a bid to justify their station at the expense of interrupting our workday.

Herman Cain Campaign Headlines at TX Tea Party Event

This Corndog learned that Herman Cain’s Campaign was going to headline at a Clear Lake Tea Party sponsored event around 6pm so after listening to Herman Cain's radio interview with Michael Berry and some special nacho-time at Chuys, Husband and I headed out to Gulf Greyhound Park.

We arrived early for the good seats. There were a number of tables set up for local conservative candidates campaigning for a myriad of Galveston County and Harris county offices as well as some contenders for House District positions. I’ll get more into that in a second post as what I really want to focus on is Herman Cain’s speech so without further ado, here is some of my awesome iphone videography of Herman Cain last night at Gulf Greyhound Park:

Apologies for the snippet but as you can see I’m no videographer. I have asked Smitty to help me edit the 30 min long video of his entire speech but am having trouble uploading it from my phone because technology hates me at the moment. When I figure it out there will be more to come.

UPDATE I: What inspired us to attend Herman Cain's campaign stop last night:

Our usual habit after work is to hop in the truck and beat feet for the hov lane right quick and fast in order to stay ahead of the the rest of the herd. We tune in the radio or listen to the comedy station on Husband’s iheartradio app. Lately we’ve been tuning in to Michael Berry. Last night we learned he was going to interview Herman Cain so we stayed tuned in for that. Anyone who has tuned in regularly to Michael Berry knows that he has been(or still is) an avid supporter of Rick Perrry and has made some criticisms regarding Hermain Cain’s 9-9-9 plan and some comment Herman Cain made when he was asked to opine on “that rock” and how he thinks it relates to Rick Perry’s relationship towards black people.

Political interviews can usually be so lame and scripted that you find you’ve tuned in to a stump, not an interview. This was not the case with Berry’s phone interview with Herman Cain. Mr. Cain was comfortable and direct. He didn’t come across as anything less than genuine and unscripted and for us that was worth checking him out at Gulf Greyhound Park last night. Maybe We Pick Our Own Tomatoes?

There’s an ABC news article that’s basically a version of “A Day Without a Mexican” set in Alabama. Many may be aware that Alabama is at the center of criticism for implementing some of the most stringent anti-illegal immigration laws to date.

According to the article, Alabama growers complain that Americans (read: non-Hispanics) don’t want to pick produce for low wages; that many American workers “last about two days max” then go back to their couches to resume collecting unemployment.

If naturalized and native-born Americans are intent on eradicating illegal immigration then maybe it’s time for actions to speak louder than complaints. This would require leaving the couch to go pick produce or perform any other menial job most illegals find themselves performing rather than staying home to collect unemployment. Part of that issue according to the ABC article is that unemployment usually pays higher than what Americans (read: non-Hispanics) are able to generate from picking produce either because they are unskilled, out of shape, not built for the job, or just not motivated to do it.

Though it may be early as far as gauging the effects of Alabama’s new laws go to really hang criticisms, perhaps if state government starts taking people off the dole we’d see just how willing (or unwilling) folks are to do the work many illegal immigrants (and legal immigrants) were doing.

One of the most frequent complaints is that illegals come here and live off our tax system and take advantage of our “free” medical and other welfare services. What I have witnessed has been mostly the opposite. Sure, I’ve seen the welfare and Social Security offices flooded with a majority Hispanic population but I live in Texas so that’s no surprise. I’ve also seen Hispanic men stand for hours every day waiting to be selected for any kind of work they can get. I have never seen any other race—legal or illegal do that. I’ve seen truckloads of Hispanic workers exhausted from a day working outdoors as Husband and I make our way home from our office jobs.

Not to make this out to be a soft stance on illegal immigration—I’m against it—as there are lawful ways to come to America for work. Many of the Hispanics crossing our borders are coming here to make a better life for their families (not just sending money home to Mexico and abroad) and just as I’ve seen Hispanics at the welfare office, I’ve seen blacks and whites at the welfare office. When we lived in Louisiana the welfare office was mostly peopled with blacks. Pardon my assumption but I’m betting the further up north one travels the more whites one would see or at least the more diverse the demographic would be in the welfare office. Still, I can’t say for sure as I’ve not visited welfare offices up north.

State legislators and their supportive communities taking action against illegal immigration talk a tough game yet at the end of the day, if Americans really want to support tougher laws meant to quell thriving communities of illegal immigrants then Americans will have to have solutions for dealing with the many job vacancies this will create. Americans against illegal immigration will need to be willing to step in to the jobs left vacant by any legislatively created exodus.

Got my mattress into storage. What a battle!

Got most of our stuff packed and moved into storage this weekend. In 110 degree heat. Just me and my friend. I will say this: I will never move my mattress again. Skye, my sister's dog, passed away at a ripe old age this evening. May she enjoy many balmy breezy days in the green fields with the rest of our beloved pet companions that have gone on before.

Skye was a blonde shelter dog, a chow/lab mix. Looked like a miniature lab but with perked ears,a short coat and a thick neck. She was a good dog—a smart dog. One of the best. My sister was in junior high when she got to pick her up from the ASPCA off 610 in Houston. We all loved that dog and that dog loved us back. It was hard seeing her body get old and frail.

She would play and get all riled up. She would know my car was coming as soon as I was at the beginning of the subdivision. She loved to play and goof with you. Smart, loving, good guard dog. Shelter pups are the best and they let you know it. I'm glad I got to see her this past weekend just to pet her a bit.I hope we meet again someday. Good Skye.

Stupid Chihuahua

My room mate has a stupid, stinky, scabby Chihuahua named "Zoe". She's nasty. She's a little bow-legged, funk magnet with an unhealthy obsession with licking herself slowly and sloppily. It is (f)trucking GROSS. She smells, she's too meek, she's just about a toothless, bug-eyed, bat-faced hot mess of dog with overgrown claws. I (f)trucking hate this animal. I hate being nice to her. I hate having to look after her by default because her owner is hardly ever at home. I'm officially not giving a crap anymore about this dog, whether it gets bathed, eats, gets pet, acknowledged, you name it. There is a reason we have been a one cat household.

I hate rat terriers, chihuahuas, cocker spaniels, poodles, pekingese and any other mop-headed small dog. HATE them. I'm using the word hate against a being that doesn't do anything but bow to an owner's will. Who can respect that? Get some personality, fight back, be cute or stubborn or personable, something. Anything. Just stop crapping and pissing all over the carpet and come when called. The worst thing a stupid little dog like Zoe can do is stay away when she's let outdoors and disobey when called back home. Chasing down a dog gives me a case of the red ass faster than Jeff Gordon turning left.

The kicker? I love animals. I give to animal charities. I've been an avid pet owner all my life thus far. Our cat Moonie? He's the last one. After him I'm done with animals. He's more a member of the household than some four-legged squatter. And it isn't just dogs. I can't stand an obnoxious cat. Did I mention that I live with a lovable but easily spooked overly talkative cat as well? Not my cat mind you, the room mate's cat. I don't even know why she has pets if she isn't going to ever be home. Not my problem.

I just started a new job this week and oh boy. I'm not sure I knew what I was really getting into. I've never been one to be fazed by questions like, "How old are you?" or "How much did that cost you?" but one question that chaps my hide lately is "Is that your natural (hair) color?". I mean, really! I think it bothers me more because people these days just have no manners whatsoever.Everything is 'in your face' and 'everybody's business' so the assumption is ask anything of anyone. I don't really care if people know I dye my hair. I'm not ready for the silver to shine through and while I'm not a 'natural' redhead, I caught up to it as soon as I could. I may not be one in color but I'm certainly one in 'spirit' IYKWIMAITYD.

I'm just really over the over-familiarity that people assume these days. People are very frank and laissez-faire in conversation with one another—particularly in the workplace. In fact, the more I think about it, the more it pisses me off that some of these cretins have had the gall to out right ask me. I've even had a couple of men at work ask me this which I, in turn, find particularly boorish and creepy. These people aren't my friends. They are my co-workers. So rude!

If anyone has any creative comebacks for this stupid question, I'm all ears. All I've been able to come up with so far is just a really good 'go-to-hell' laser stare as in, "Go to hell. Go straight to hell. Do not collect $200. Just go effing burn" See? Natural redhead.

Ever find yourself in a situation where you find yourself putting more into a friendship than the other person? That's me. I need some new girl friends. I find that I am falling out of touch with my current bestie. She has been chronically inconsiderate for the past month and I think I've had enough. The only problem is that we live together for the time being so I can't just not hang out with her anymore (even though the break would do me good).

The charges? Chronically texting her new boyfriend while hanging out with us thereby making us feel more like 'distractions'. Canceling on important dates at the last minute (she skipped out on a friend's birthday celebration --whom she's known for 14 years-- at the last minute to go camping on the beach with a guy she knew two weeks). Canceling out yet again on scheduled girl's day out stuff, only hanging out when she needs something, failing to show appreciation for major efforts performed around the house (I cleaned and organized the entire garage by myself yesterday and all I got from her was a blase word of 'Thanks'. Underwhelmed much? It's no wonder her other friends have stopped showing interest in her life. It turns out she is very one-sided therefore I am no longer going to go to the extent that I go to with most of my friends for her. I am going to make an effort to connect with other women I can hang out with and have stuff in common with so I no longer feel short changed in the friend department. Will she get a clue? Who knows. I'm just tired of feeling under-appreciated and don't believe I should have to chase someone down for quality time. Eff that.

Garden Progress: It Grows!

Garden cat Hakim Olaju-kitty monitors progress, kills spiders with his presence, and waters frequently. (Okay only the first one really. He only gets paid in kibble so what does he really care.) 'Help' these days...

Our 8 x 16 Victory patch.

(R - L) Marigolds, tomatos and onions and bell peppers with green beans in the front R corner, Two more short rows of tomatoes, peppers, marigolds and basil interspersed with each other (not my idea). The last two blank rows at the top L are supposed to be carrots but nothing much is sprouting. May scrap those for okra pretty soon. The two round mounds are yellow squash and zucchini squash respectively.

'The Italian Cafe': Not Going to Eat There Any 'Amore'

Dean Martin posthumously sides with Mario Batali and Me in declaring 'The Italian Cafe' shitastic.

Okay, so Mario Batali is too much of a food snob to actually grace this place with his orange pants and Dean Martin is, well, dead. Still, if you're going to market a place as an Italian Cafe, do more than just hang black and white photos and play the same five cliche Italian tunes.

Bid 'arrivederci' to $5 if you visit "The Italian Cafe" for lunch. This little venue has been around for years and I had always wanted to check it out. One day when I stole myself away for a few hours I did and I'm glad I scoped it out before bringing Husband.

On the plus side, the hostess/cashier was congenial. The cook was busy (maybe taking lessons? as I was soon to learn she certainly couldn't cook). Drinks were self-serve and the ice mechanism was broken however there was a tub of ice with a scoop next to the soda machine. I ordered water but the hostess said I could get whatever kind of drink I wanted. I stuck with water and a lemon slice. I had ordered the lunch special "grilled chicken with spaghetti". Ten minutes later my number was called. I picked up my tray and this was on it:

The 'Parmesan cheese' was in a little plastic tub and was like the powdered kind you buy in the green can at the grocers only it was stale. I'm not a food snob when it comes to the green can of powdered Parmesan—when I'm at home (I know, Batali and The Good Eats guy are cringing). I expect an Italian restaurant to bust out with the real deal, grated. Regarding the spaghetti, the cooks name was probably Al Dente and that's as close as this pasta made it. The noodles were more "al rubber garden hose" then they were "to the tooth". The sauce? I've had 88¢ jars of Ragu that bests this.

The piece that really set me off was the sparse portion of boiled chicken hanging out on top. No flavor, no seasoning and, oh yeah, not grilled. I braved one small bite then got up and left. I was one of three people in the entire place during lunch on a Tuesday. That should have been my first indicator but I thought that since the town is a little sleepy anyway and picks up more at night, what did I have to lose? Apparently my appetite. The hostess was sitting outside on the benches talking to someone on the phone. I didn't try to get back the money I paid or engage her in any way. At that point I just wanted to leave and find some quick grub. A 99¢ Taco Bell crunchy taco saved me.

Can I Please Surf in Peace?

Yeah, it's about that mindless.

For more than five minutes I would like to surf the internet, read blogs, post thoughts, check email, pay bills, etcetera without being interrupted by someone sitting behind me waiting for me to 'get done' or someone sitting behind me talking baby chit-chat to their chihuahua or oversharing their dating (re: hook up) escapades. I don't give a truck and I'd like more than ten minutes alone to myself to do the things I want to do without interruption!!!!!!

Since starting this post I have been interrupted no less than ~~three~~ FIVE times and the kicker is that my roommate knows she is up my ass and annoying the ever-living #@!& out of me. My mind is screaming "GO AWAY!" so I can, at the very least, finish this rant.

I want to spend some time by myself today. I've either been occupied by Husband while he has some rare time off or the roommate and I cannot recall anytime I have had more than two hours to myself. I think maybe I need a vacation now.

Yes, after having a brief education on how drywall screws work just now I'm convinced that if I don't get out of this house away from everybody for at least a few hours I'm going to go postal.

Unwelcome recurring invaders have included: f#cking wasps aka the devil's insect, and ungodly brown spiders with whom I have declared no quarter be given.

Oh My Garden!

Yesterday we all took turns pulling something like this in efforts to create an 8' x 16' patch of potential: our very own 'Victory Garden'. I've never been very rural nor have I ever exercised a green thumb (mine's more 'seafoam' than green). Hopefully that will change for the better with this foray into the Farmer's Almanac club.

Today we make a run to the local nursery to grab some herbs for the side garden: rosemary, basil, oregano, thyme, you name it. I'm still on track to handle up on some Spring cleaning as well but I don't expect to be Captain Bust-ass today since yesterday began at 0700 after going to bed @ 0200. Fueled on caffeine and sheer determination, we stopped sometime around 1700. Then we proceeded to plop our happy butts on the couch for a movie after which I promptly went to bed. I can't remember the last time I slept that hard. Ibuprofen and water are my besties today (whimper). I still wish I was in bed!

UPDATE 2-26: Thanks for your feedback. So far Twitter has received a 'less than' rating from most of you insofar as usefulness or interest. Still, I'm thinking about incorporating it for a new blog—mainly using it like a barker or an enhancement, not a main feature. That way, if it sucks I'm not 'married' to it.

Listen, some of you sent a little help my way when I was starting on this whole 'back to school' venture. I just want you to know that I am still putting your gifts to good use and that I am continuing on with school just only at a slower pace and that right now I'm just trying to regroup. By going back to full-time work, I hope to rebuild our coffers. Once I get settled in a solid gig then I'll look into taking one class at a time in the evenings while Husband finishes his school. He has a lot less to complete than me and right now he needs my support. I just don't want anyone feeling gypped by my current course of action. Thanks for your continued support.

Dropped my classes today. I hated to do it but my mind just isn't in the game. There are other priorities right now that need my support so I'm moving forward with two job fairs on 2/23 and 3/10. Wish me luck.

February is doing a number on my psyche. I hate it. January and February are my two least favorite months. It's like waiting for the year to get in gear. I just got back from having the polished changed on my toes. It was badly needed and I don't mind paying Asian women with nimble hands to do it for me. Curling up into a fatball to slop polish on my piggies just doesn't make for good DIY. Attempting to polish one's own toes is akin to defending oneself in court. In either situation you come out looking like a fool and no better off.

My class schedule is officially kicking my ass and I don't think I can do it anymore. I was foolish (See? I'm working a theme here) to try to attempt two heavy-hitters in one semester while holding down semi-full-time employment. If I study one course, the other suffers. One—anatomy and physiology—is heavily steeped in details and the other—math—I'm practically teaching to myself. Plus it's my weakest subject.

In the meantime I've started the search back to more regular employment instead of dickering with school and my current gig. Husband has less schooling to conquer ( a year tops) and we could use the higher income so perhaps right now isn't the best time for me to tackle heavy coursework. I do want to go back to school but right now I spend most of my time hating life and everyone else and I know it's the stress of juggling classes and work coupled with worrying about our income. It's so sad too because out there are people pushing themselves through similar circumstances. Just get me the shirt already.

Sestak-gate: White House Offered Romanoff Job, Too

Allegations that the White House offered Joe Sestak a job in exchange for dropping out of the Pennsylvania Senate race echo an earlier report of a job offer to candidate Andrew Romanoff in Colorado.

On Sept. 27, 2009, the Denver Post reported that the Obama administration offered Senate candidate Romanoff a position if he canceled plans to run for the Democratic nomination against incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet.

The paper said the job offer, which specified particular jobs, reportedly was delivered by Jim Messina, Obama’s deputy chief of staff. One position the Post cited was a job at USAID, the foreign aid agency.

Messina contacted Romanoff soon after news leaked in August 2009 that Romanoff, former Colorado House speaker, would make a primary run against Bennet.

Romanoff turned down the offer and announced his candidacy. Obama then endorsed Bennet, who had been appointed in January 2009 to fill the seat vacated when Ken Salazar became secretary of the Interior.

But Romanoff trounced Bennet at last weekend's Colorado Democratic assembly, winning the top line on the August primary ballot.

The White House denied that Romanoff had been offered a job.

“Mr. Romanoff was never offered a position within the administration,” said White House spokesman Adam Abrams.

Nevertheless, the Denver Post disclosures may have worked against Bennet.

“People in Colorado have an adverse reaction to the external forces coming down and telling them how to think,” said Colorado state Rep. Kathleen Curry, a Romanoff supporter.

And the Post observed: “The timing of Messina’s latest intervention sparked particular concern — because of the appearance that the administration was trying to buy off a nettlesome opponent, to some; to others, because the timing made the effort appear so ham-handed.”

Earlier in 2009, Colorado Democrats recommended Romanoff for a position in the administration, spokesman Abrams acknowledged. But he said that, although “there were some initial conversations, no job was ever offered.”

Observers are taking a fresh look at the Romanoff story amid ongoing controversy over Rep. Sestak’s claim that he was offered a position in the Obama administration in exchange for dropping his primary challenge to Sen. Arlen Specter.

Sestak said the offer came in July 2009, a month before he announced his candidacy.

Fellow Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois, the Senate majority whip, has called on Sestak to say more about the job offer.

Republicans, meanwhile, are pressuring the White House to divulge details about the offer. Rep. Darrell Issa of California, the ranking Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has gone so far as to suggest a criminal probe in the matter.

Issa issued a statement saying: “For months, a United States congressman has stated that the White House offered him a job in exchange for not running in an election. We call this a bribe.

“Despite being asked numerous times, the White House has not refuted Congressman Sestak's allegations, but refuses to disclose who offered what and when. So this administration, that pledged to be a beacon of transparency and change, continues to conceal from the American people the truth about what exactly was said and offered.

“Until we get direct answers, this White House doesn't have a leg to stand on when they talk about openness and change.”
